About our College
The Norwegian College of Dance (DNBH) is an independent foundation part-funded by the Norwegian state. The college originates from the Institute of Ballet founded in 1966 by the legendary Norwegian dance teacher and choreographer Jorunn Kirkenær.
DNBH offers a bachelor degree programme in Dance with Pedagogy. The first year gives the students a solid base upon which to choose a specialisation in either modern/contemporary Dance, or jazz technique, for their 2nd and 3rd years.
The modules in dance technique comprise half of the study programme and form a sound foundation for performance communication while providing a thorough pedagogical base. Students also take supplementary dance modules that help to develop their stylistic, expressional and technical skills.
The other main emphasis of the study programme focuses on pedagogic concepts and theories on teaching, psychology, didactics and philosophy. Students become familiar with key didactic concepts such as creativity, performance, demonstration, observation and evaluation. They learn to use didactic analysis as a tool in teaching and to adapt their teaching methods to different target groups. Emphasis is given to practice placements which begin as early as the first term, providing the opportunity to teach a variety of different pupil target groups.
